What to Do With Old Windows

Nov 20, 2024

Do you have old windows that need to be replaced? If so, you’re probably wondering what to do with them once removed. There are several options for what to do with old windows, so check out our creative ideas for repurposing or responsibly disposing of your old windows after a replacement.

What to Do With Old Windows

Creative Repurposing Ideas for Old Windows

There are countless ways to repurpose old windows and give them new life as unique household items. One popular method is turning them into mirrors. This DIY project is fairly simple: all you need is mirror glass cut to size and some adhesive, and voila! You have a new, vintage-looking piece that adds charm to any room.

If you have a green thumb, old windows can be an amazing addition to your garden. Old windows can be repurposed to serve as a cold frame, protecting your plants during the cooler months. If you have multiple old windows, why not take it further and build a mini greenhouse?

A medium-sized old window can be converted into a stylish coffee table with some lumber and hardware. Smaller windows can be transformed into photo frames, displaying your cherished memories in a unique and eye-catching way. Larger windows, particularly those with multiple panes, make for an excellent decorative divider or a shabby chic headboard.

You can even repurpose old windows into parts of an art project. Mounting a painting, photograph, or other piece against the backdrop of an old window can make it stand out. The window pieces or frame could also be incorporated into different designs, providing a source of raw materials for your art.

Environmentally Friendly Disposal Options

While reusing old windows can be a fun and creative project, it may not always be possible or feasible. If that’s the case, there are several environmentally friendly disposal options for you to consider.

Many recycling centers accept windows, especially those made from wood, metal, or vinyl. It’s best to contact your local recycling center beforehand to confirm their acceptance policy. For a smoother process, you’ll need to remove any paint, caulking, or other additional materials from the windows before drop-off.

Donating to a non-profit organization or a reuse center is another great way to dispose of your old windows. Organizations such as Habitat for Humanity may accept windows in good condition and use them for affordable housing projects. Research and contact local organizations to see if they need window donations.

Upcycling businesses, often called “junk haulers,” may also be interested in picking up old windows. They repurpose items deemed waste and turn them into functional or decorative pieces. Even if you’re not equipped to take a creative approach to reusing your old windows, that doesn’t mean these businesses can’t do it.

We had almost all of the windows in our home (14 total) replaced. I felt like Anthony really had my best interest in mind when selecting windows, and there were no pushy sales tactics. They were very helpful and responsive along the way. The installation went smoothly and was all completed in only about 5 hours with no issues! The double lifetime warranty really puts my mind at ease too for the future.
Best windows and installation I have experienced. We had Champion replace some of our windows, but they have ice on the interior of the frames in the winter (I assume due to lack of proper insulation). The Bluebird windows have no icing on the interior, and are much easier to clean. We'll use Bluebird to replace the remaining windows in our house.
I got a lot of quotes to replace a few windows and a patio door and BlueBird was by far the best value. Quality products for a reasonable price. The install went very smooth but there were a few things on the exterior I thought could use a little touchup. They were happy to come out and fix it and the finished result is great. I will definitely use them when I replace the rest of the windows in my house.
