Vinyl vs Aluminum Windows

Apr 10, 2024

New windows offer a lot regarding energy efficiency, durability, and intruder protection. So, how do you pick the right ones? It used to be that wooden windows were the way to go, but today, you’ve got plenty of options. If you’re trying to determine whether vinyl vs aluminum windows are right for your home, you’re not alone. Each material offers its unique benefits, and it’s best to do your research before you commit. Let’s compare the two so you can make an informed decision for your window upgrade.

Vinyl vs Aluminum Windows

What Are Vinyl Windows?

Vinyl windows are modern, affordable, and virtually maintenance-free. You can pick from a wide range of colors and finishes to match your home’s aesthetic in just about any configuration, from single-hung windows to multi-pane bow windows. The pros and cons of vinyl windows are straightforward. They’re very durable. If damage occurs, it doesn’t stand out, thanks to the window’s design, and if you like the look of wooden windows, you can purchase vinyl windows that mimic the look without paying nearly as much.

One of the biggest perks of opting for vinyl windows is their energy efficiency. Thanks to their ability to reduce heat transfer and light penetration, vinyl windows will save you money each month for as long as you live in your home.

What Are Aluminum Windows?

Aluminum windows are another popular choice homeowners pick for window upgrade projects. They come in various colors and finishes to match your existing decor, and many homeowners like their low-profile design. Aluminum window pros and cons are a little muddier to weigh. They’re a fantastic choice regarding durability, maintenance, and appearance, but they may need to stand up to the quality you can expect from vinyl windows.

Aluminum windows are durable and relatively low-maintenance, but they require occasional cleaning, and moving parts must be lubricated regularly.

What’s the Difference?

Vinyl and aluminum windows are both popular choices for Colorado homes. They’re incredibly durable and can withstand just about anything Mother Nature brings. Vinyl windows hide damage better, while aluminum windows can show signs of chips and dents more easily. Aluminum is also prone to corrosion and fading over time, but it withstands harsh conditions far better than vinyl and easily handles extreme temperature changes.

Vinyl windows are nearly maintenance-free, but aluminum will require you to regularly clean and lubricate moving parts. Otherwise, your aluminum windows can get stuck or experience corrosion, rust, and mold more quickly.

The biggest perk to purchasing vinyl windows lies in their energy efficiency. All newer windows are more energy-efficient than older ones, but vinyl takes the cake. They’re made with the ability to insulate a room and regulate the temperature, while aluminum windows are prone to conducting heat and warming up an interior room. This can lead to energy loss, especially during the summertime.

Although they’re both more affordable than wood windows, vinyl windows are significantly cheaper than aluminum ones. This is a perk that’s especially important for homeowners on a budget.

One final thought to consider when choosing between vinyl and aluminum windows is their distinct looks. Aluminum windows are designed with a low profile, leaving plenty of room for a pane of glass. Vinyl windows, on the other hand, can easily mimic the look of wood grains, which looks fabulous on homes with traditional styles.

We had almost all of the windows in our home (14 total) replaced. I felt like Anthony really had my best interest in mind when selecting windows, and there were no pushy sales tactics. They were very helpful and responsive along the way. The installation went smoothly and was all completed in only about 5 hours with no issues! The double lifetime warranty really puts my mind at ease too for the future.
Best windows and installation I have experienced. We had Champion replace some of our windows, but they have ice on the interior of the frames in the winter (I assume due to lack of proper insulation). The Bluebird windows have no icing on the interior, and are much easier to clean. We'll use Bluebird to replace the remaining windows in our house.
I got a lot of quotes to replace a few windows and a patio door and BlueBird was by far the best value. Quality products for a reasonable price. The install went very smooth but there were a few things on the exterior I thought could use a little touchup. They were happy to come out and fix it and the finished result is great. I will definitely use them when I replace the rest of the windows in my house.
