How to Clean Different Types of Windows

May 09, 2024

Windows are often neglected in cleaning routines, but they can get caked with dirt and grime. To allow sunlight to pour into your home, keeping them well-maintained and clean is best. Luckily, it’s easy if you know how to clean your windows. At BlueBird Windows & Doors, we’re Colorado’s trusted window company. Let’s look at the different types of windows and the techniques that work best for each style.

How to Clean Different Types of Windows

Different Types of Window Frames

Your window frames must be cleaned as thoroughly as the glass panes to get the best curb appeal. Each unique window type requires special cleaning techniques and products, and incorrect methods can lead to accidental damage. Some of the most common window frames include:

  • Single-hung windows: This common window frame comprises an upper and lower sash divided into four or six glass panels. The lower sash can be lifted and lowered to allow airflow into the home.
  • Double-hung windows: Double-hung windows are just like the single-hung variety, with one exception. The top and bottom sections can be moved up and down to let fresh air inside.
  • Awning windows: Awning windows open at hinges on the top or side of the frame. Learning how to clean awning windows is pretty easy since they swing open.
  • Casement windows: These windows have a large glass pane encased in one frame. The entire window opens crank-style on a hinge and swings outward. Knowing how to clean casement windows can keep them fingerprint-free year-round.
  • Bay windows: Bay windows protrude from the home and are composed of one fixed window with two or more smaller windows on either side. Bay window cleaning can be more difficult since the center window does not open.

Cleaning Different Types of Glass

Dirty fingers, dog noses, and grime can quickly collect on your windows, making it difficult to see outside. Knowing how to clean different types of glass ensures you have an unobstructed view of the outdoors from every glass pane in your home. Here’s how to clean the most common types of glass:

  • Annealed glass: Gently scrub this glass with soap and water and dry the glass with a microfiber towel.
  • Heat-strengthened glass: Clean heat-strengthened glass with the same products as annealed glass, but use a gentle hand. This type of glass is easily scratched.
  • Tempered glass: Tempered glass also scratches easily. Use a soft cloth, gentle soap, and water to clean it.
  • Coated glass: Use soap and water to clean coated glass and a microfiber towel for drying. Never use cleaning products that contain ammonia on this type of glass.

Otherwise, the coating will wipe away along with the dirt and debris.

General Rule of Thumb When Cleaning Windows

Knowing how to clean windows properly makes it easy to keep them well-maintained without causing damage. As a general rule, always reach for mild soap and water first. It works best on most types of glass and will provide the best results.

It’s also best to clean your windows when the weather is mild. Skip cleaning on hot days to avoid streaks left behind from quickly drying soap residue.

We had almost all of the windows in our home (14 total) replaced. I felt like Anthony really had my best interest in mind when selecting windows, and there were no pushy sales tactics. They were very helpful and responsive along the way. The installation went smoothly and was all completed in only about 5 hours with no issues! The double lifetime warranty really puts my mind at ease too for the future.
Best windows and installation I have experienced. We had Champion replace some of our windows, but they have ice on the interior of the frames in the winter (I assume due to lack of proper insulation). The Bluebird windows have no icing on the interior, and are much easier to clean. We'll use Bluebird to replace the remaining windows in our house.
I got a lot of quotes to replace a few windows and a patio door and BlueBird was by far the best value. Quality products for a reasonable price. The install went very smooth but there were a few things on the exterior I thought could use a little touchup. They were happy to come out and fix it and the finished result is great. I will definitely use them when I replace the rest of the windows in my house.
