Casement vs. Double-Hung Windows: Differences

May 09, 2024

New windows increase curb appeal and add to the value of your home. They also increase your energy efficiency so you can enjoy monthly lower energy bills. But how do you choose between casement vs double-hung windows? Our experts at BlueBird Windows & Doors have gathered the pros and cons of each type so you can pick the right windows for your home.

Casement vs Double Hung Windows

Casement Windows vs. Double-Hung Windows: Major Differences

The biggest difference when comparing casement windows vs double hung windows lies in how they open. Double-hung windows are divided into sections that can be lowered and raised to allow airflow into your home. On the other hand, casement windows open crank-style, and they swing outward to let fresh air inside.

Determining the best window type for your home is a personal choice based on your needs, the window’s location, and your budget.

Casement Windows

Casement windows open outward like a door, creating a large area for air to pass through. They open and close at the turn of a crank at the base of the window. When the window is shut, it can be secured with a latch on the inside of the frame. This creates a seal that keeps your home at a comfortable temperature and lowers your energy bill each month.

Here are some of the biggest casement window pros and cons.

Pros

  • They’re easier to open and close than other window types
  • They provide unobstructed views, thanks to the large glass panel
  • The latch and seal create a better barrier to prevent energy loss

Cons

  • They are typically more expensive than double-hung windows
  • The cranks are prone to problems
  • Most A/C units aren’t compatible with casement windows

Double Hung Windows

Double-hung windows have two separate sashes that can be opened and closed independently. They’re an extremely popular choice for most homes and can be incorporated into most architectural styles. Single-hung windows are a similar style, but the upper sash is fixed.

Here are the pros and cons of double-hung windows:

Pros

  • They’re more affordable than most window types
  • They are designed to accommodate most A/C units easily
  • They are relatively low-maintenance windows

Cons

  • Some double-hung window brands are difficult to clean—especially the top sash.
  • Lower sashes may break down and have difficulty staying open
  • The horizontal framing separates the sashes and creates an obstructed view of the outdoors

We had almost all of the windows in our home (14 total) replaced. I felt like Anthony really had my best interest in mind when selecting windows, and there were no pushy sales tactics. They were very helpful and responsive along the way. The installation went smoothly and was all completed in only about 5 hours with no issues! The double lifetime warranty really puts my mind at ease too for the future.
Best windows and installation I have experienced. We had Champion replace some of our windows, but they have ice on the interior of the frames in the winter (I assume due to lack of proper insulation). The Bluebird windows have no icing on the interior, and are much easier to clean. We'll use Bluebird to replace the remaining windows in our house.
I got a lot of quotes to replace a few windows and a patio door and BlueBird was by far the best value. Quality products for a reasonable price. The install went very smooth but there were a few things on the exterior I thought could use a little touchup. They were happy to come out and fix it and the finished result is great. I will definitely use them when I replace the rest of the windows in my house.
